Morocco was... like stepping back in time. We stayed in the heart of the old city, in the ancient medina of Fez, Morocco. Over 9000 "streets" and alleyways. There are no cars. These paths were forged by foot and by donkeys. To get around, you simply walk. Some places get crowded, and it's normal to brush shoulders with passersby. The young yield to the old.

We didn't see the sun for days - the civic engineering of this city blew me away. Narrow, winding footpaths flanked by two and three story buildings that shield the hot desert sun and keep the old city cooler during the scorching summer months.

They call Fez the birthplace of craftsmanship in Morocco. Walking the winding, narrow streets, you'd hear a tink, tink, tink, tink, that slowly got louder. Round a corner and there's a metalsmith in a narrow workshop, iron pieces covering the walls and surrounding him on the floor. He's hand-chiseling the finest engraving. Around another corner, a tailor with a buddha belly sits cross legged in the window of his small workshop, thimbles on two fingers, hand stitching a gorgeous piece. No cameras here, our guide Mohammed mutters under his breath. Many Muslims don't like to be photographed.

Around another corner, a man shaping a bone-handled knife on a stone. Into the square beyond, a coppersmith bangs his hammer in a steady rhythm, forming perfect patterns on a copper bowl. He hands me the hammer, I clumsily swing with my unpracticed hands. Two years, he laughs, two years it will take you to graduate. Then he flirts with gleaming eyes.

We watched a man gut fish with his bare hands in the open, pungent fish and meat market. Cow heads hang outside the meat stalls. A dried trickle of blood halted in its tracks down the nostril of a severed camel head. The smells overwhelm. Careful with sandaled feet in this section.

Hours later, that hand-gutted fish appeared at our table, courtesy of Mohammed's sly orchestration. It's cooked into the most tender and delicious tagine with caramelized, sweet tomatoes.

One late afternoon, Carissa and I went out on our own to see sunset over the tombs that overlook the city (cot'd in comments)..

One of the things I love most about sourcing is seeing how things are actually made.

A glimpse into the craftsmanship inside the ancient medina of Fez Morocco. These artisans hand dye, cut, hammer, and stitch leather into beautiful bags in workshops tucked into the maze of the old city.

Yes, travel is wonderful. Adventurous. Full of surprises, delights, new experiences, and the unexpected. Cultural learning and exchange. Warmth, help, and guidance from strangers. Heartwarming encounters.

AND, it's diarrhea for days. Or constipation (or both!). Four hours of sleep preceded and followed by full days of exploration and decision making. Waking up dizzy on day 5 because you still haven't gotten enough sleep. Showers that don't drain until you're ankle deep in dirty shower bathroom floor water. Many hours of discomfort on international flights. Layovers and expensive, crappy airport food. Four hours of sleep again, as you get up early to go back to the airport. And, in this case, the most bitter juice we'd ever tasted. A shock considering we were expecting sweet, freshly squeezed-in-front-of-our-eyes orange and pomegranate juice.

People tend to romanticize the travel. Sometimes I catch feelings of envy, of jealousy. I'm here to remind that things aren't always what they appear to be. This goes for people, too. I am consistently reminded to curb my judgement, to have more compassion, and to remember that everyone faces their own challenges.

What matters is how we move through our challenges. How kind we are to others, and to ourselves. To remember to bring it back to the heart. Life is full spectrum, and we're all on our own path.

Part of ours is to inspire others, and we truly hope that we are, without discounting the challenges that come along with these incredible experiences.

Behind the scenes! This is one of the production houses we were able to tour on our recent sourcing trip to Fez, Morocco.

It was incredible to see the men and women at work creating these bags (and for me to try my hand at a bit of cutting).

We can't wait for you to see and feel these bags in person. I'm thrilled with the quality of construction and the rich, thick, buttery soft leather used.

Mohammed. He started as our guide and became our friend.

We’re so grateful for his guidance and navigating us through the labyrinth of the 9000+ winding alleys and footpaths that make up the Fez medina.

This vibrant marketplace is truly a maze and Mohammed made it effortless. That in itself is a priceless gift.

But it didn’t stop there. He facilitated such unique experiences, like getting us behind the scenes of production houses, leading us straight to true artisans and their workshops, and the meals. Oh, the meals. One morning, he bought fresh fish at the market. Hours later, in a completely different part of the medina, those fish showed up on our table in a perfectly cooked tajine, the best tajine we’d had. Another morning, he brought us fresh donuts tied together with palm fiber with a side dish of freshly churned butter.

He drove us to mountain towns outside of Fez where we shared snacks, hand-fed monkeys, and enjoyed the fresh, cool mountain air and stunning views of the Switzerland of Africa.

The depth of his knowledge enriched our experience of Fez, and walking around, it seemed like he was the Mayor. Fez wouldn’t have been the magical experience it was for us without him.
